Samsung Bot Chef 2020

Samsung Bot Chef is a product concept that brings cutting edge robotics to the home. Designed for collaboration, Bot Chef can help chop, stir, season, and cook the perfect meal through simple voice interactions.

The 2020 iteration of Bot Chef was developed in the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to leading the industrial design of the robot, my role on this project expanded to the mechanical engineering of critical robot joints and hardware. I worked with an interdisciplinary team of hardware and software engineers on multiple aspects of the project, including human-robot interaction, aesthetic form development, gripper/wrist mechanics, and colour/material/finish (CMF) definition. I also designed the demo kitchen environments for the project, and was the principal cinematographer for the concept videos created during the various stages of the project.

DEMO VIDEO

This video captures the live demo shown to Samsung C-suite executives, communicating the vision and desired experience for Bot Chef. It highlights the various technical capabilities of the robot, such as object avoidance, collision detection, and vision system.

INCREASED MOBILITY

The 2020 version of Bot Chef included a low-profile linear rail mounted under the kitchen cabinet. This added an additional degree of freedom to the arm, allowing it to travel horizontally and greatly increased the range of motion.
